Off the Subject
A small phenomena is happening in old Southwest…culture in 15 minute increments. River Laker wants to show the world that they too can have culture from around the world on their own back porch. Every once in a while, a Roanoker steps forward to claim our city. When I went to Patrick Henry in the early ’80′s, Downtown looked like a snapshot of Detroit… papers and hookers blowing down the streets. Until someone stepped forward and created Center in the Square. It’s been uphill since then. Despite construction and sanitation problems, the Market has bloomed. The farmers, the restaurants, the chocolate…
Mill Mountain Theater used to be on Mill Mountain. Farmers used to sell wherever they could. The Science Museum was poorly attended. Let’s hope that River Laker’s attempts to educate Old Southwest don’t fail because of his short-sighted neighbors.
I would love to take questions for the subject of future blogs: how does one write, what does one do once one has ‘something’, etc. Please write and I will address all questions that I can.

How would you define SWVA culture?
What is your all-time favorite quote/song? Why?
What gets on your nerves when you write?
Don’t ask a teacher to give you questions… I have more… I’ll save them for later!
I’m glad to see this creative blog post about the “bringing the community together with culture in 15 min happenings”. Thank you. It was so nice to see folks enjoying the short Veveritse Brass Band (http://Veveritsebrassband.com) performance, dancing in the street, etc. It’s a shame the few neighbors, who know me and live just a couple of houses away, as soon as it started got on their phones and called the police without first expressing their concerns to me. But the police were great, seemed a little surprised at the sight of a 9 piece brass band on my porch instead of some raucous party action, and allowed us to close out the show after the 15 minutes was up.
