Wanderlust: Photographs by Alec Soth @ North Carolina Museum of Art
    Sunday: 1:00 am – 4:00 am

Alec Soth, Bonnie (with a photograph of an angel), Port Gibson, Mississippi, 2000, chromogenic print, 16 x 20 inches, Collection of Allen G. Thomas Jr., © 2000 Alec Soth

    Julian T. Baker Jr. Gallery December 23, 2012–June 30, 2013

Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, photographer Alec Soth (b. 1969) specializes in large-format color photographs that tell the stories of specific places. This exhibition features 15 photographs by Soth from the collection of Allen G. Thomas Jr. from two recent series, Sleeping by the Mississippi (1999–2002) and NIAGARA (2004–2005).

Soth traveled the length of the Mississippi River, from Minnesota to Louisiana, over four years to create Sleeping by the Mississippi, a compelling body of work that features a place, the people who live there, and the passage of time. While he rarely focuses on the river itself, Soth links the vastness of the Mississippi with recurring imagery: isolated people, empty rooms, and spare landscapes. The images, especially when contemplated as a unified series, evoke loneliness and isolation as well as possibility and intimacy—sometimes all in one frame.

The NIAGARA series includes portraits of newlyweds and the honeymoon hotels found in and around Niagara Falls, as well as images of life after the honeymoon. Like Sleeping by the Mississippi, this series alternates between portraits of individuals, vernacular architecture, and desolate landscapes, evoking themes of loneliness, love, and the disintegration of romance. Soth chose Niagara Falls, he has said, because “Niagara is a kind of metaphor for the passion (the falls) and the aftermath of passion (the surrounding region).”

Dwelling: Interiors by Page H. Laughlin and Pamela Pecchio @ North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation
    Sunday: 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Page H. Laughlin, Untitled (Mirror, Mirror), 2000, oil on linen mounted on panel, 37 1/4 x 35 1/2 in., North Carolina Museum of Art, Purchased with funds from the William R. Roberson Jr. and Frances M. Roberson Endowed Fund for North Carolina Art, © 2000 Page H. Laughlin

    North Carolina Gallery February 10–July 28, 2013

Dwelling: Interiors by Page H. Laughlin and Pamela Pecchio, an exhibition of photographs and paintings by two contemporary artists, examines and compares the investigations of interior spaces in each artist’s recent body of work. Showing Pecchio’s Habitation series alongside Laughlin’s works based on design magazines reveals strikingly similar themes and aesthetics, though the artists are working separately and in different mediums. The dialogue created between these works further enriches them, drawing visitors into a new conversation about the variations of depicting domestic interiors and the underlying tensions in such imaginings.

Pecchio and Laughlin are both interested in the role that domestic spaces play in our lives, but each artist takes a unique approach. Pecchio focuses her lens on objects and dynamics of living areas—the comfortable understanding between a body and a home and the everyday residue of living that we leave in our wake. In contrast Laughlin’s paintings, largely drawn from a series titled Magazine Interiors, examine the idealized décor and arrangement of spaces shown in popular shelter magazines such as Architectural Digest and Dwell. Both artists are analyzing, dissecting, and reconsidering the elements of everyday living, but the objects and spaces in these images are not only the physical components of our domestic surroundings. Instead, they become intimate symbols of our existence, markers of our territory, and recorders of our history.

Organized by the North Carolina Museum of Art. Support provided by the George Smedes Poyner Family Foundation and SunTrust Foundation. This exhibition is also made possible, in part, by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources; the North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation, Inc.; and the William R. Kenan Jr. Endowment for Educational Exhibitions.

Head of St. John the Baptist, circa 1470–1500, painted and gilded alabaster, 10 5/8 x 8 1/8 in., Victoria and Albert Museum, London

    Gallery 2 March 3–May 26, 2013

“Images are ordained to stir one’s affections and heart to devotion, for often one is more stirred by sight than by hearing or reading.”—from a 15th-century commentary

Visitors to the North Carolina Museum of Art will experience a rare glimpse into the spiritual lives and religious customs of medieval Christians during the run of Object of Devotion: Medieval English Alabaster Sculpture from the Victoria and Albert Museum. These alabaster reliefs and freestanding figures, drawn from the Victoria and Albert Museum’s comprehensive collection—the finest such collection in the world—were displayed in the homes, chapels, and churches of both aristocratic and nonaristocratic Christians.

Intricately crafted, these 60 works are some of the finest examples of religious sculpture produced across England from the late 14th through the early 16th centuries. Object of Devotion explores the history, meanings, and uses of these luminous alabaster sculptures and allows visitors the opportunity to learn about the religious culture of medieval England and to study the role of art in medieval commerce.

Object of Devotion: Medieval English Alabaster Sculpture from the Victoria and Albert Museum is accompanied by a 224-page, fully illustrated catalogue.

Object of Devotion is organized and circulated by Art Services International, Alexandria, Virginia, and supported by a grant from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. In Raleigh generous support is provided by the Ron and Jeanette Doggett Fund. The exhibition is also made possible, in part, by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources; the North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation, Inc.; and the William R. Kenan Jr. Endowment for Educational Exhibitions.

Working South: Mary Whyte @ Peninsula Fine Arts Center
    Saturday: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Working South reveals an intimate portrayal of the workers left behind by so-called progress and outsourcing: cotton pickers, wooden boat builders, textile mill workers, crabbers, shrimpers, the shoe shine man, and so on. Traveling the South for three and a half years, artist Mary Whyte, who lives in Charleston, South Carolina, interviewed and painted dozens of people in various industries that are quickly vanishing or dramatically changing. Through the challenging medium of watercolor, Wyhte has taken the unseen and given them a face we cannot easily forget. The exhibition will include 30 major watercolors, 20 accompanying watercolor studies, and a selection of the artist’s sketchbooks. The Peninsula Fine Arts Center is the final stop on the tour that included the Morris Museum of Art, Gibbes Museum of Art and Telfair Museum of Art.
Also on view, from April 6-28 is Genesis 2013, Pfac’s long running college-student juried exhibition. From May 2-26, regional high school students are featured in their juried exhibition, Prefaces 2013.
